Update for Songbird 1.10: Apple Keyboard Media Key Support

2013-03-17: I have duplicated Nick’s add-on and created a version that I am hoping I will update on a timely fashion as new songbird versions are released. You can find this add-on on the Songbird add-on website.

2012-11-04: Updated xpi for Songbird 2.1.

Apple Keyboard Media Key Support is a must have Songbird add-on if you use Songbird on a mac. With the recent Songbird update (1.10) it is no longer compatible and cannot be installed. I decided to update the compatibility in the install (xpi) and see if still works. Guess what? It does.

So, until Nick uploads the official version to the add-on site I am uploading an updated version here. I have emailed Nick so he can upload this to the official site. Note that I have updated the version to 1.4.1 (from 1.4.0) so Songbird will let you install it.

To install:

Download the xpi file. ( 2012-11-06: Now pointing to Songbird 2.1 compatible xpi )
Go to Tools > Add-ons…
Click “Install” on the dialog box that pops up and select the file that you downloaded in the first step.

If you are using Songbird then another good mod to do is my Play Button iTunes Patch that prevents iTunes from starting up when you press the play button.

It works fine but you'll need to use the play button itunes patch for complete satisfaction (with only the extension installed itunes launched — and Songbird paused in the same time). Thank you for your work !

Thanks for doing this chum, your pedigree speaks of its own heritage as this extension is just what was ordered for the caged bird to fly. What ho, huah huah :)

I don't use the remote extension much, but you could probably try doing the same thing (i.e. incrementing the version) and seeing if that works.

I clicked the link to the xpi file, but I'm just sent to a page with a mess of symbols. What's wrong?

Right click on the link and then click on save as.

You can also copy and paste the URL of this page in a new tab in songbird and click on the link there.

Just wanted to say that it worked perfectly on 1.10.2 (current latest) with Lion for anyone that has doubts. Great Work!

I´ve been looking for this for ages now!! Great work, the only thing that needs to be figured out now is how to implement the itunes patch to avoid it when pushing the play button! Otherwise, a perfectly working addon!!

Unfortunately, although this triggers Songbird to play, it also triggers iTunes to play.

How would we update for songbird ver 2.0.0?

downloaded the file from step 1. "download the xpi file"

I get the following files:
Install.rdf
platform>Darwin_x86-gcc3>components>sbAppleMediaKeyComponent.dylib

when i open install.rdf, firefox opens and shows a xml page, but nothing happens
