Lenovo X60 Tablet

I just ordered the Lenovo X60 Tablet! =D After spending a lot of time researching the tablets and the options, I ended up with the X60 because of my target use. Part of this was the MBA, which I will be starting either this Summer or this Fall depending on which school I get in. I wanted the machine to be light, quiet and ultra-portable, and X60 was one of the best options. Now I am going to anxiously wait for it to arrive by the 5th of April! :) I will definitely be blogging more about my experience and maybe even a review is in line :)

Below are the specs and explanation for my choices.

  • 12.1” MultiView + MultiTouch WVA XGA TFT and Intel Core Duo L2400 LV (1.67GHz, 2MB L2, 667MHz FSB)
    • I opted for the lower resolution XGA screen (1024×768) because the SXGA (1400×1050) did not have the MultiTouch feature.
  • Genuine Windows Vista Business
  • 1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)
    • I wanted to get 2GB RAM but that made this a little too expensive. So I went for the little cheaper option of one 1GB DIMM leaving myself room for an additional chip if I see the need. My first plan is to try ReadyBoost through an SD card.
  • 60GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm Serial ATA (2.5”)
    • I spent quite some time researching the 7200rpm vs. 5400rpm option and finally settled on 7200rpm. Most of my friends with tablet PCs pointed to hard drive speed as a major bottleneck which helped with the decision; but in the end this was hard because the added speed will definitely sacrifice the battery life.
  • Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (US/CAN/LA/AP)
  • ThinkPad X61 Tablet 8 Cell Li-Ion Battery
    • Another thing that my friends pointed out was that a lot of times you end needing the adapter in long meetings, which defeats one of the main purpose for having a tablet. So I went the greater capacity 8-cell battery which should last at least four hours but more like five or six if I use power throttling.

I'm so excited for you. Please let me know if you find the XGA sufficient. I cannot choose - paralysis!

RE: x60 farhan
Hi Tim,

I knew I was going to be a little low on the screen resolution with the XGA but I still went ahead with it for the MultiTouch feature. The biggest issue that I have seen so far has been that in tablet (768x1024) mode some website go off the side and end up requiring me to scroll horizontally. Another time the Cisco "installer" wouldn't run saying that it required at least 800x600. The fix was easy because I just switched to the normal mode and ran it again. For note taking purpose the resolution has been sufficient for me in both tablet and normal modes.

I have personally liked the touch feature and see myself using it more. I think this is mainly useful for clicking and a _little_ bit of dragging. IBM/Microsoft has done a good job of enlarging the keyboard in the Tablet Input Panel if you are using your finger so you can type using just your hand, but I wouldn't rely on too much typing in this fashion. Also, consider the MultiView if you will be using this outside. I haven't seen a side-by-side view of the two screens but I am guessing that this probably makes a difference. If you don't think there will be many times that you will be using the tablet outside or in sunlight, and that you won't be using the touch feature much then I would suggest going with the higher resolution.

It is a tough decision; Good luck!

Your New X60 Tablet Brenda
Do you have it yet? Is the multi touch multi view screen supposed to be more readable at an outdoor cafe?
My Sony TR5ap's screen is barely readable when running on batteries, except in a cave.

After two failed attempts with Toshiba tablets -- the M400 special order last January fried my flash drive just after a message indicated it thought the USB port was 1.1!! A Tecra M7 refurb rebooted itself with a "serious system error" at least once a day. I just sent it back and am seriously considering ordering the X60.

I really prefer Windows XP tablet OS as several of my good, but older programs are not Vista compatible.

I'm looking forward to your review!

Wise Choice Zar
I am cosidering that you probably have it by now, tell me... how it compares to a normal laptop?
Since the 12.1" MultiView + MultiTouch WVA XGA TFT LCD screen is smaller compared to other laptops, how did you adjust from 17" to 12.1" ?
Have you tried playing in any games on it? If so, how was the performance and gameplay.
I just bought the Compaq Presario A931NR last week and lets just say that so far it has fufill all my needs and wants in every way.

Here are the specs:

3GB DDR2 memory
DVD±RW/CD-RW with LightScribe
17" WXGA+ high-definition LCD widescreen display with BrightView technology and 1440 x 900 resolution
160GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 358MB for the games.
Built-in 2.0 MP Web cam and microphone, i use it for skype
5-in-1 digital media reader, 3 USB 2.0 ports
Weighs about 6.7 lbs and is 1.8" thin which looks pretty slim.
6-cell lithium-ion battery, gives me about 2 hours of playtime on Call of Duty 4, World of Warcraft and Grand Theft Auto IV.
